Tunisia: Security forces must be held accountable for killing protesters

Launch of new Amnesty International report

On Tuesday 1 March, at a press conference in Tunis, Amnesty International experts will detail shocking accounts of brutality committed by Tunisian security forces during the protests that led to the departure of former President Ben Ali, and call for accountability for those responsible.

The report, Tunisia in Revolt: State Violence during Anti Government Protests, provides an in-depth look into the violence against protesters in December 2010 and January 2011. The UN has put the death toll for the period at 147 in addition to 72 people who died in prison in incidents linked to the unrest.

An Amnesty International delegation visited Tunisia from 14 to 22 January, meeting with families of those killed in the unrest, individuals injured during protests, other witnesses, and former detainees, as well as lawyers, Human Rights Defenders, trade unionists and medical professionals. Researchers travelled to Hammamat, Bizerte, Regueb, Thala and Kasserine.

The event will be the first time Amnesty International has ever been able to launch a report in Tunisia.
